A security guard alert the fire service to the fire Maungatere Alternative Education Centre in Rangiora. about 3.10am, Saturday.
By the time fire fighters arrived the damage was done, the centres main class room was well involved in the fire, taking all the students hard work with it.
High schools from Oxford, Kaiapoi and Rangiora send students, who don't fit into the mainstream schooling, to the centre. The staff then help the students, about 16 at a time, overcome their difficulties, before sending them back to school.
The centre's director, Carol Weaver, was still coming to terms with the devastation the fire caused.
