Help Our Foodbank

Christchurch City Mission Foodbank Appeal

14th June – 30th June

Foodbank Appeal Preview Side Image“Your bag could help fill theirs”: That’s our message and big hope for the 2019 City Mission Foodbank Appeal.

We are saying, if life has been good to you recently, why not share that good fortune with others who need it badly this winter?

We are appealing to people to dip into their own bags and buy non-perishable food to fill our appeal bags. It’s an easy way to make a big difference to the struggling people out there. You will be helping us to help them.

Our campaign runs from June 14 to June 30. New World is helping us make as easy as possible for you to contribute.

Find the appeal bags in your local New World, or a mailer. Drop the full bags back at New World, or back to us at 276 Hereford Street, by June 30.

Why the Foodbank is so important

In 2018 we gave out over 38,000 food parcels and we expect to supply even more this year.

The Foodbank gives emergency food to those in need and is open Monday to Friday, 9am-12.30pm.

People struggling to feed themselves come to the City Mission’s Hereford Street site. They get interviewed about their circumstances. Usually bills like rent, power, school, and medical have left no money for food.

A large quantity of the food the Mission distributes is kindly donated by generous businesses and donors.

All kinds of families from all parts of Christchurch come to the City Mission for food to get them through a tough patch and winter always adds extra pressure.

Donations that really help us best are:

  • cans of baked beans, spaghetti, soup and fruit

  • cereal, toothpaste and soap, sanitary items.

Donations to the Mission’s Foodbank are enormously appreciated. You can donate by:

  • Delivery to our reception at 276 Hereford Street

  • A donation through the mail (PO Box 1032, Christchurch) or made at reception

  • The Mission collects food and provisions (toiletries, cleaning products, baby products, blankets and warm clothing etc.) from people who have contacted us either by phone (03 365 0635)  or email.

  • Tertiary institutions, particularly primary and secondary schools often have appeals when they encourage their students to bring along a can or a packet of non-perishable food for donation to the Mission.
