Curtains are not just about the look and privacy. A good curtain and track system will keep the warmth in and could be as good as double glazing to keep you warm. Curtains should preferably be lined and generously fitting to be effective. If you cannot afford effective curtains, you can get free, recycled curtains through our Curtain Bank.
Free recycled curtains for low income households
The Curtain Bank collects donated curtains from the public and adjusts, lines and gives them away for free to low income households. Since the earthquakes a lot of good curtains have been donated to us from residential homes, rest homes and commercial premises which are being demolished. Curtain retailers also regularly donate end of lines to us.
A Community Services Card is not required to receive recycled curtains. Homeowners, tenants in private rentals as well as CCC and Housing New Zealand tenants, can get free curtains.
How to apply
If you cannot afford effective curtains, print out a curtain measurement form or contact CEA and we will send you one. Measure up your windows as indicated on the form and then contact CEA to make an appointment. Bring your curtain measurement form with you to your appointment.
Please note the curtain bank is available on an appointment only basis.
We will endeavour to find curtains as close to what you would like, however we do depend on what is donated to us. If the curtains you choose need to be altered we will give you a call when they are ready to pick up.
Mobile Curtain Bank
If you cannot come to the the Curtain Bank we may be able to drop the curtains off at your house. This service is only available to very elderly people, disabled people, solo parents with children who do not own a car, etc. The Mobile Curtain Bank works in Christchurch and Ashburton and will occasionally travel to other towns and localities around Canterbury.
