On Sunday the 27th of August, several hairdressers and even some beauticians, from across the community came together to provide our community with free haircuts.
A haircut can be a very standard part of life for a lot of people, some people might let it grow out a little here and there when we get busy, but for the most part, taking time to get your haircut is just another part of life.
For those at the Christchurch City Mission, however, it’s often the farthest thing from being a feature of everyday life. Haircuts are rarely prioritised when someone is choosing between paying their power bill, rent and buying food. The same goes for those who live on the street, or those who are staying in our night shelters. Haircuts are a readily forgotten luxury. Self-esteem and self-care are hugely important to be able to take steps along positive pathways forward. The opportunity to provide these haircuts to our community is a privilege.
The hairdressers chose to be part of this offering, and this is no small gesture. Thank you to each and every one of the hairdressers who came along to snip in. Thank you also to the organisations who supported the initiative such as such as Canterbury Team Wear, Progressive Salon Supplies, and Scenic Hotels.
