Cheques going, going… gone

People interact with us in many different ways and a very important one is when they donate to support our work.

Most often it is our Sarah who first sees the contributions come in and she says many donors want to also say how much they appreciate what we do.

Sometimes they will do it with a little note, messages, perhaps a blessing or comments on phone calls.

She looks after our regular donors and has got to know many of them over the years. When we want to know what our donors think about things, we turn to Sarah.

“They know we provide beds and food, but some don’t realise quite how much we do in other ways, like addiction and housing and it’s good to tell them with our stories,” she says.

“Our donors are very loyal. They genuinely care for the people in their community and want to help.  Often they have different passions, some want to see care for women, others like our work with addiction, but most just like our overall work through all our services.

“We do offer a lot and we are going to offer more and more which is fantastic. Yes, food is great short-term, but our supporters also want to see lives lifted and we are starting to produce those results for people to see.”

With the banks stopping the use of cheques by the middle of the year, Sarah says some of our supporters will find it a challenge to adapt to new ways to pay their bills and of course support us.

She is happy to help anyone who wants to talk over the new processes. She says setting up a automatic payment at the bank is the best approach for regular givers and for other donors it will probably be getting the hang of the bill payment process.

Another possibility is donating online through our website using a credit or debit card.

Her advice is to find someone who you are comfortable talking over the processes with.

“It might be children or grandchildren who can set these up for you. Or you might prefer to visit the bank who can help set things up for former cheque users. Our bank, ANZ, said they were happy to do that for customers.”
