Catch up with us at the cathedrals

Christchurch’s two Anglican cathedrals will have a big part to play in our City Mission Christmas activities this year.

Our carol service lifts everyone’s spirits.

Christmas trees will be twinkling away in both the Transitional Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral where presents can be left so that we can give them to children of families who can’t afford gifts.

We will also be inviting everyone to celebrate the season with us by coming along to our annual City Mission Christmas Carols in the Transitional Cathedral on December 10.

Our cathedral traditions go right back to our beginnings, and we look forward to strengthening our community connections through them.

The Transitional Cathedral Christmas Tree will be up by November 26 and Dean Ben Truman says all presents left at the tree will be passed to us.

Ben says he is constantly amazed at the number and generosity of people from the community who come to the tree to donate.

The Christmas Trees are such an enormous visual statement during Advent, so it’s impossible to miss the community’s generosity.

He loves to see parents and grandparents talking to children while standing by the tree “and how quickly and joyfully (most) of the kids catch the spirit of it and pop down their gifts with a smile”.

Ben says hardly a day goes by in December without someone sharing with him how important the gift-giving is in their family’s festive traditions.

Our other tree is our own spectacular spiraling parallel helix steel tree which will be on show inside Christ Church Cathedral in the Square in December.

Just like last year, the tree visits will be part of the Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement group’s 12 Days of Christmas event. Public tours will be held inside the cathedral on weekdays and a suggested $25 koha donation per person will go towards our Christmas work. Presents for children can also be left at the tree for us – just as they have been for decades.

Cathedral reconstruction plans mean this will be the last chance to see a City Mission tree inside the Cathedral until 2031!
