Community Support

Help when it’s needed most.

Our team of five social workers and a mental health nurse help transform Canterbury lives. Their services and support take our clients beyond the emergency crisis that might have brought them first to our attention and help them manage their lives and problems.

The City Mission operates the only drop-in social worker service in Christchurch where people can be seen without appointment. This is available at our Hereford Street headquarters. We also operate an Outreach Team of a social worker and a mental health nurse who help people on the streets.

Social workers help people find the answers to their problems. These problems can be big and challenging and the answers can differ greatly from person to person. Often the support involves referrals and advocacy with other agencies. Sometimes the social worker only needs to see someone briefly for an immediate problem.

More complicated cases will become part of a social worker’s caseload for longer-term answers. All clients using the men’s and women’s emergency accommodation at the City Mission are assigned a social worker.
